Free Form Guitar
Composer: Kath
Instrumentation: electric guitar
I’d love to discuss this one, but honestly I am not really qualified. “Free Form Guitar” is exactly what it says on the tin, nearly seven minutes of Terry Kath’s wildly experimental guitar playing. The album notes take pains to point out that this is a live performance with no overdubs, pedals, or any other recording tricks. This is not something you’ll go away humming, but an atonal cascade of often violent noise. As I am not a guitarist, however, I don’t have the skills to discuss much about the performance and the techniques used.
In their early days, Chicago toured with Jimi Hendrix, who was already established when Chicago was just starting out. This will surprise anyone who thinks Chicago is “You’re the Inspiration”, but Hendrix loved Chicago. The first time he heard the group, he made it a point to seek out Walt Parazaider, telling him “You’ve got three horn players with one set of lungs and a guitar player who’s better than me!” High praise for Terry Kath.
“Free Form Guitar” opens side 3 of the album, and is an unexpected leap into new territory. After this distant detour, the album returns back down to Earth for the next tune.
According to the liner notes, "Free Form Guitar" was performed entirely live using a Fender Stratocaster and a Showman amplifier with twin 15 bottom using a Bogan P. A. amplifier as a pre-amp.
